Let's party like its 2012...

When I was 18-21 New Years Eve was an awesome party night. I would meet my friends at a designated pub, we would have a few drinks and then move on to another pub. Along the way we would encounter more friends, listen to live music, eat free food provided my the landlords of the public houses we frequent and maybe even the odd free drink at our regular haunts.

When the chimes of Big Ben sounded we would all raise a glass of whatever we were drinking the time and then all sing Auld Lang Syne (does anyone actually know all be words; does it matter?) and then after another hour or so of drinking we would return to to the designated friends house and crash out in sleeping bags, or a bed if lucky, to wake the next morning with a fuzzy head, a dehydrated throat and the taste of a number of spirit based drinks lingering on the tongue.

New Years Day would be spent mostly in recovery from the excesses of the night before and therefore would pass in a semi conscious state.

I do believe that I might have lived through the golden age of New Years Eve celebrations. In those days past you could be spontaneous. There was no need to visit a pub to collect a ticket in advance. If you left a pub at 10.00pm you could re-enter it again. Food (well nibbles) were on the house and a big group of people would not be turned away on the door by bouncers.

Nowadays you have to be organised. If a group want to go out they have to select the venue in advance and someone has to organise tickets. Some places charge entry on New Years Eve and it will be extra if you want food. A group of lads are most likely going to have to split up to avoid the bouncers disapproval and exiting the venue is likely to mean that you cannot enter again without joining a massive queue in the cold drizzle outside.

For me, since children, New Years Eve is a much quieter affair spent with friends over a meal with a few happy New Year's and a glass of fizz. I have been known to go to bed before midnight. The all night parties, falling over drunk on the way home, being sick the next morning, I will leave all that to the next generation.
