Household chores

The trouble with owning a house are the household chores. I realise that I am very privileged to own my own house, well at least the part that the bank doesn't own but sometimes the household jobs get a bit on my nerves.

As I have mentioned before, living in a hard water area means that the bathroom continually needs to be descaled. The dishwasher always needs emptying. The recycling bin is full minutes after it has been cleared out and dust builds up as soon as the polish has been put away.

Then there are those other annoying jobs that can be left but eventually need to be dealt with, for instance, sorting paperwork and vacuuming behind beds and sofas. Actually I don't generally mind using the vacuum cleaner. I think it is quite satisfying vacuuming a carpet and seeing in miraculously become clean again, just like mowing the lawn.

One household chore that I usually steer clear of is ironing. I don't usually see the point of ironing. If no one did ironing then no one would be concerned about those little creases. I usually wash my work shirts and then hang them up to dry and this allows most of the creases to fall out. My shirt is usually underneath a suit jacket anyway.

Today I had to sort out my wardrobe. Not the most exciting Saturday afternoon but needs must. As I was sorting I decided that it was time to iron all my shirts. There were quite a number. So I got to work, whilst watching the Olympics, it took sometime but at least I managed to watch some exciting sporting action at the same time. I started to find that the ironing was actually quite therapeutic and whilst my mind wandered I started to build up a cluster of nicely ironed shirts. By the time I had finished I had a wardrobe full of neat and tidy garments. I believe this might be a first. And a tidy wardrobe is a nice thing to have.

Maybe I should iron more often...?

  1. I'll believe it when I see it! A few creases are your trademark.

  2. Iron more often? Now what would be the point in that? That's for us people with too much time on our hands. Haven't we had this conversation before???? ;)

  3. A very lovely assistant head I know says it doesn't matter how much ironing there is, it always takes an hour! I am worried though Ed. will it be ironing tea- towels next?

  4. I am an assistant head, some may say that I too am lovely, and I quite like ironing. I would disagree that if always takes an hour, usually 45 mins if there aren't lots of work shirts which is dependent upon whether it is an office or client based week for my husband. I will be ironing tomorrow; Sundays are for washing and doing the hoovering (and ironing) as the Exponents sang in the 80s.

  5. Can someone help please - what is ironing?

  6. Take them to the dry cleaners and have a massage instead, much more therapeutic.
