Marginal Gains

So, it appears that the cycling in the velodrome is finally over and what a ride it was. The GB team were once again supreme. This is even after the rule changes that occurred following the Beijing games.

I watched with interest this afternoon to see Trott, Pendleton (Queen Victoria) and Sir Chris Hoy perform majestically with Gold, Silver and Gold medals respectively. Laura Trott, just 20 years of age was truly awesome, judging the last race to perfection. The delight in the rest of the team was spectacular; in particular her cycling team mate and roomie for the games Dani King reaction revealed the camaraderie that surround the whole cycling group. It was quite an emotional moment.

The team finished by equalling the 8 golds that they achieved in China, however there is still the chance for a BMX gold as well.

It appears that some countries have started to question Team GB's success, suggesting that maybe the equipment or technology might give them an advantage. This was explained by Chris Boardman as marginal gains. Apparently marginal gains are small little changes that when added up might make the difference. These include things such as; streamlined helmets, heated hot pants and the very best technology on the bikes.

So maybe their technology is good, but this comes after years of research and development. The point well made is that there was nothing to stop any other country doing the same thing and it's all within the rules.

However, no matter how important these marginal gains are the amazing dedication and talent of the cyclists can simply not be overstated.

A fantastic effort, great job.
