Selling techniques

I wouldn't want today's entry to upset anyone, however I do find sales people a little annoying. In particular when you look interested in a product the sales person swoops on you. So apologies to anyone who is reading this and is a sales person.

I really hate this when browsing in a shop. I am just looking, maybe considering buying, when an eager shop assistant sidles up and says, "Can I help you with something?". Actually NO, I am just taking a little look. If I wanted some help I would ask. In certain shops you can see these eager beavers ready to pounce, I avoid eye contact.

The Internet is full of new sales techniques. Whenever you buy something on the Internet then the emails start to follow. The emails usually start with, "Dear Ed, we have some recommendations for you..." The online book and just about everything else company is a master at this email. I seem to spend time each week scrolling to the bottom of one of these emails and clicking the unsubscribe button.

Lately I have had the dubious pleasure of inviting sales people into my house. I think this is a little bit like inviting a vampire into your home. Whilst on the doorstep you are well protected from their patter, a simple, no I'm not interested and a close of the door and they are gone. But as with a vampire, once invited in, they have the chance to bite and suck you dry.

They insist on telling you stuff that you already know, adding a bit of flannel, trying to be flattering, engaging you in pleasantries...get lost. Just tell me what price and when you can do it please. If you give me the answers I want and deliver as promised then I will be happy.

Just as I write this I have received a phone call from a sales person who is hoping to provide me with some fitted furniture. She's very nice, asks me how I am, apologises for the noise, apparently she is being naughty and listening to the Olympics; she promises to phone me back next week. I will not fall for it...it will take much more than this to seduce me into buying something.
