Unexpected Beasts

If we travelled back in time to when early people first inhabited the caves of Southern France it would not have been unusual for the inhabitants to look out of their abodes and to see a variety of animals living in the valleys and plains surrounding them. These would have included, wolves, cave bears and lions. It must have been quite dangerous times.

Fast forward to the present day and here in England the most dangerous wild animals we might expect to see are wasps, the odd adder (although I have never seen one) and maybe an fairly aggressive squirrel.

So it comes as a bit of a shock to hear that maybe a lion is on the loose somewhere in Essex. The BBC reported that there had been numerous sightings of the lion and I even read that someone had heard loud roaring coming from across a field. The police were on the case confirming that no big cats were missing from the local zoo and that a travelling circus didn't have any animals with it. A man with rather large feline tattoos and a fetching t-shirt festooned with the image of a tiger surmised that it may have escaped from a private collector. Why would people collect lions, I can't even understand collecting garden gnomes but at least they can't eat you!

The local population were told to stay indoors whilst the emergency services searched the area for the big furry pussy cat. It has not been found. According to the local publican, of the aptly named Red Lion, the local population ignored the curfew so they could enjoy his company for a bank holiday Karoke singsong - I loved that, I wonder what songs were chosen, maybe The Cure, Love Cats was on the list?

The search for the lion has been called off with one resident claiming that the 'big cat' was in fact her large 70cm pet cat called Teddy Bear, see a picture here.

This incident created a bit of news interest and reminded me of another event last year where a large lion teddy, usually only seen in expensive toy ships like Hamleys, was left in a field. This caused quite a stir until a police helicopter was unable to pick up a heat signature with its thermal imaging camera. Why would someone leave a full size lion soft toy in the middle of a field?

What this has done is spark the debate about whether big cats exist in the wild, hiding out on the moors or in forests. The jury is still out. So be careful next time you go for a walk in the woods, you never know what might happen, its probably safer to stay inside on the sofa.
