End of the World? Not yet...

I heard a great line on the radio the other day. It was a comedian talking about his Grandma, apparently his Grandma was so pessimistic that if she had met Nostradamus he would have told her to chill out.

If you weren't already aware the biggest End of The World prophecy is nearly upon us. The End of Days is due to occur on the 21st December 2012. How the end will come is not well understood but there are very many people across the world, mainly in America I believe, that are preparing for Armageddon. Apparently you can book your pets into a special kennels so they will be looked after during the event, people have already paid non refundable deposits. I'm uncertain about how this works...firstly if the world ends why would Tibbles the cat be spared, unless the cats are behind it all? And secondly what happens if by some miracle the world doesn't end after all? Do you get your money back? Will the management be liable for false advertisement? These are I'm sure you will agree important questions.

Of course the chances that the world will end just before the holidays is very small if there was any chance at all Apple wouldn't be relaxing their iPad Mini in time for Christmas.

The rumours have come about due to the fact that an ancient calendar invented by the Mayan civilisation runs out 4 days before Christmas, therefore after that day there is no date on their calendar, time and space ceases to exist. The thing is there are no Mayans around to ask. For that civilisation the world ended a long time ago.

Of course I remember the rumours about the Millennium Bug. This was a computer glitch that meant the integral chips would be unable to compute th date when we reached the year 2000. The horror stories sounded plausible. All computers would be affected causing problems in banking, governments and transport. Planes would crash, bank accounts would go haywire and traffic jams horrendous. Of course none of the above happened. The worst thing that happened was an error appearing on my compuer to say Windows had had to unexpectedly close.

I write about his subject today because 50 years ago this night the world was the closest it has ever come to ending. The Cuban missile crisis had reached boiling point and both sides were ready to push the button. Nuclear war was a real possibility with everything that it entails. Luckily common sense prevailed.

Lets hope this continues because if the world does end I'm sure it will be at the hands of mankind rather than to natural causes.
