Introducing the new horse burger

It's tender, low in fat and high in protein. That is apparently the properties of horse meat considered a delicacy in many countries. I have never eaten horse meat knowingly, however it seems that those of us that are partial to the odd value supermarket burger may have indeed sampled this meat.

Eating horse in this country is nowadays considered taboo as like cats and dogs the horse is considered to be a domesticated animal, a pet if you like. It appears that in the early 1900's horse meat was actually quite popular especially in the shires of York. It is not illegal to sell horse meat products in this country. The offence that has caused such an uproar over the last two days is that the burgers containing the horse meat were not labelled as such.

In Japan a pink meat served sliced with ginger and onions called sakura is in fact horse meat. In some areas of France notably in the south horse is eaten with specialist butchers selling the meat. In some areas of Italy horse is eaten like a steak and is also enjoyed cooked in thin pieces and in stew. In Tonga horse is considered a meat to be served at special occasions such as weddings and funerals. The Icelanders liked it so much that it is thought that they delayed converting to Christianity after Pope Gregory III had banned it.

So if you are served horse when on travels to one of these countries then maybe you should consider trying it before saying 'neigh'.

  1. I really hope they don't just bin all of the horse burgers, but sadly I suspect they will. What a waste of perfectly good meat, just because we are a bit squeamish - lots of people who are starving in the world would love to eat those burgers (even if they were Tesco value burgers which are probably mostly rusk anyway...)
